They say a change will do you good

Reflecting on the recent hunter moon, I was taken by the reminder that full moons are a time to assess and let go/ perhaps a time to change. The temperature sure made change this week! Hello single digits and frosty mornings.  Raise your hand if you were somewhere that got that first dusting of snow, likely wet and heavy! Well, just as the season changes, autumn into winter, Mount Cain is experiencing change too. The renovations and upgrades to the Cain Lodge are well underway under the direction of Helen and Casey Brown. Folks will notice changes to the lodge entrance, decks and roof, new washroom facilities, a change in location for the composting outhouses, upgrades in the ski shop and hostel and much more! This work is possible because of the CEIRP grant received in 2020.   Thank you to the volunteers who have been aiding Helen and Casey.     

At the AGM in September, the MCAPS board of directors saw some acclamations and a few portfolio shuffles and welcomed a first-time board member, Sean Little as the Trailer Park Director.  Following the AGM Dave (Dazy) Weymer, who has served as a director previously, was nominated by email to the directorship of Summer Planning.  So, more change occurred at the October board meeting; Dazy was elected to that position, welcome back Dazy.   

There were also two positions that were resigned, that of the 2023-24 elected Hospitality Director, Max Oudendag and the 2021–2023 Chair, Erin Pickering – that’s me 😉.  I am grateful for the opportunity to have led this board during some challenging times with big decisions at the table. Thank you to the board and folks who made this role meaningful for me. It is important that the Chair position rotates regularly, as it minimizes burnout, provides directors with insight into all portfolios, and ensures distributive leadership.   

These resignations mean more changes! The Hospitality portfolio is vacant, and the board is seeking nominations for this role.  You can find more info about and make a nomination  HERE. While I will remain on the board as Director of Communications, David Mazzucchi will lead the board as the Chair.

“I’m excited to work with the MCAPS Board of Directors, Staff, and Membership as we prepare for and operate through the 2023/24 ski season.  I really appreciate everyone stepping up to help keep our little treasure of a ski hill operating.  There are quite a few projects going on this fall – please feel free to contact info@mountcain.com if you have some free time to lend a hand.  As Chair, my goal is to be available to the Membership and to keep operations moving forward as efficiently as possible.”

Mount Cain’s Staff and Volunteer training weekend is fast approaching, December 2/3, 2023.  

Volunteer Opportunities and Work Parties continue!  We will continue to call for volunteers to help with building projects before the snow flies, check your email/ check the Cain Facebook page for that info.  

Public on sale for MCAPS accommodations is Tuesday November 7th, 2023, at 6pm.  

• Mount Cain has a limited number of spaces, if you are unable to book a room with us, check out some of the other local accommodations – find a list on our accommodations page. 

The Cain Lodge Hostel rooms will continue to be sold weekly, with bookings opening on Tuesday for the upcoming weekend.   

There will be changes occurring on the website over the next few weeks as we update the information for this season.  

• The 2023-24 Operational Schedule is online, and ticket and accommodations pricing have been updated.   
• Approved MCAPS board minutes from summer and fall and a DRAFT copy of AGM minutes are available on the website also.   

Remember! Be prepared for winter conditions when traveling to Cain! – winter tires, tire chains, and no tow behind trailers.
