It was nearing 6:00pm last Saturday when the mighty Vikings from South of Sayward went up against the Vikings of The Real North Island in a Tug of War. Tensions were high as Vikings big and small grabbed the rope with grit and determination and pulled like the snow depended on it. After a mighty battle, the Vikings from South of Sayward reigned supreme, setting up for a Snowshoe Baseball grudge match on March 30th. Tribal tension was soothed with tincture from the Devil’s Bath and the Brewmaster of Cumberland. And the dancing continued until Darren unplugged the sound equipment.
And if that paragraph does not make sense, you need to spend more time at Cain.
The costumes were outstanding. The snowboard course was exhilarating. The roasted pig was succulent. And we raised over 250.00 for the Port Hardy foodbank.
Sending a loud Viking shout to everyone who helped, including Kieren, Darren, Neil, Christian, June, Calib, Dazy, Campbell, Ali, Danny, Lucas, Kaila, Tyson, and anyone else who lent a hand. As well as the local business who sponsored the event: Shoprite, Devils Bath Brewing, Cumberland Brewery, Ski Tak Hut, and the Bike Shed. Mange takk (many thanks).
Spring is just around the corner, so get ready for some long days, spectacular sunsets, and more Cain-style events, including:
- Kidsfest on March 25th. There will be races, an obstacle course, snow sculpting, beacons search, Dummy Downhill and a pancake breakfast. In the evening, there will be fireworks to celebrate the kid in all of us—more details coming next week.
- Spring Break. The mountain will be open from Monday, March 27th, to Friday, March 31st. You read that right – we are open all week. That’s NINE days of skiing in a row ( or what we like to call a loooonnng weekend). Come for a day, stay for a week.
- Snowshoe Baseball on March 30th. The South Islands Shithawks dethroned the North Island Majestic Orcas in a surprising defeat last year. To prepare for the Battle of 2023, Linda has been recruiting people to move north of Sayward (preferably to Sointula), while Karen has tried to get real baseball players to take up skiing. This game is going to be a showdown! All participants must wear snowshoes. 4:00 on the Lake. Bring a chair.
- (The Real) North Island Appreciation Day. On Friday, March 31st, residents living in or north of Sayward get 25% off their tickets. Just show a piece of ID with your address or school card, and you can save money on your ticket. Why? Consider it a prize for choosing to live in the best part of Vancouver Island.
- Cypress Cup on April 1st. This elimination slalom is as much fun to watch as it is to participate in. And the results can be unpredictable – I’m pretty sure I beat Kellan Warkentin back in 2018, but he was just a kid, so I let him think he won.
There’ s never a dull moment at Cain.
It’s -4° with 200cm on the Ridge Run.
See you on the slopes,
