March 6 2024
March came in like a lion and Cainers were ready to Roar! Vahalla, I am coming ah-ha ah!
Last weekend’s spring startup was all fun and smiles. A huge shout out to the Cain staff and volunteers who leaped into action resetting the hill for what we hope will be 6 more weeks of winter!
The fun continues this weekend with a combo event – Back Country x Viking fest! Wear your furs and brush up on your backcountry knowledge with Avalanche Canada and Campbell River Search and Rescue.
Darren, Kieren, the events team, have set up a great weekend and we need a few volunteers to help us set up the beer garden, sell raffle tickets and help with the merriment. Email Danonson@mountcain.com or find Darren or Kieren before 3pm Saturday.
Kick off the raiding with an outdoor movie screening of Matchstick Productions’ “Land of Giants”. Dress in your warmest Viking furs, bring a chair, a blanket and a hot cocoa from Turks. The movie starts @ 7:30 pm on the Big Shop Door.
The ticket booth is open Friday 7-9pm so you can purchase your weekend passes and make a donation should you be camping in the parking lot this weekend.
Saturday will be boundless, so start your morning in the ski shop. 8:00 am Avalanche Canada is hosting a presentation on Traversing in the Backcountry Free Admission. Safety first folks!
While you are in the ski shop why not test out a pair of Kindred Demo Skis? Nothing like sliding on skis made near the north island in Merville!
Think you are ready to go? Out out in the snow? Not so fast! Be sure to test your skills and equipment at the Beacon Search Field beside patrol, starting at 11am.
Keep your eyes peeled for a possible appearance from Nazko the Avy Dog in Training. ** All regular dogs are asked to remain on leash and under control, this weekend Nazko top dog!
After your day of plundering the snow, slide on over to the Viking Beer Garden where you can buy raffle tickets (try to remember cash, but we’ll tap that card too!), participate in a silent auction and win prizes like a Trip for Two Heli Tour Package or a new Kindred Snowboard. There will also be prizes for Viking Spirit and Fashion.
At 4:30pm the South Island Saxon Slayers are looking to reign supreme again this year in the Viking Tug of War, look out Norse of the North.
Beer Garden will be open from 3:00-8:00 pm with live music again donated by Ianspotting. Don’t forget to tip the band!
After all that ravishing and raiding in the land of ice and snow, come in, warm up, and refuel with a delicious meal at Turks Tavern. Celebrate your victories on the dance floor with DJ Billy’s spinning all your favorite tunes in the lodge at Turks Tavern 9-11 pm. Only then, my friends it will be time to rest and dream Of how we calmed the tides of war.
Sunday the wolf pack will howl, We are your overlords.
Monumental thanks to our event sponsors: Kindred Custom Snowboards and Skis, Cumberland Brewing Company, 49 North Helicopters, Island Alpine Guides, Ski Tak Hut, Devils’ Bath Brewing, Matchstick Production, Avalanche Canada, ARC’TERYX VICTORIA, TEAAM Aero Medical Rescue, Mountain Equipment Coop, Fjall Raven_na, Campbell River Search and Rescue and Turks Tavern.
