The snow was falling as vehicles rolled in last Friday evening, and it kept coming all weekend. The wind on Saturday made for some interesting effects, but by Sunday, there was nothing but light, fluffy snow on the mountain, and smiles on faces. Shouts of joy emanated from the Ridge Run to Pete’s Trees to Kokanee. I personally experienced the happiest line-ups of the year! By the end of the day, there were tracks everywhere as skiers and boarders squeezed out every turn they could get. It came, we saw, we conquered.

And the few who stayed up for Magic Monday were treated to a stunning display of northern lights. This is a rare occurrence, and thankfully Cain photographer Kim Kufaas captured the aurora borealis dancing over our little slice of heaven.

But we are not ones to live in the past. No, we look forward to the weekends yet to come.

This weekend Mike Roma and his one-man band are playing in the Lodge on Saturday evening, so come by and hear some live music while enjoying a Cain Sunset – ½ O.J, ½ Strongbow cider, a shot of tequila, and a dash of moonshine cherry juice. Tequila not your thing? Replace it with Fireball, and you have a Cain Sunrise. And for the more sophisticated people in the crowd (to be honest, no one is coming to mind), use gin instead and enjoy an Alpine Glow. No matter how you drink your O.J., it will warm you up on what is predicted to be a cold weekend.

The following Saturday (March 11) is Viking Fest, complete with costumes, a snowboard race, axe throwing, a beer garden and live music. What do Vikings have to do with snowboards? Well, one could say were invented the sport. Vikings used two skis or one single ski to travel in the winter. While the single ski probably looked a lot different than the snowboards we see today, the fact that they used a single ski is reason enough to have a snowboard race for people wearing antlers and dressed in fur.

What can I say? It’s how we interpret history to justify our antics.

A few housekeeping rules:

  • Please take your garbage and recycling home with you. Mount Cain pays a tipping fee to dispose of the garbage and volunteers kindly deal with the recycling. Please take care of the garbage and recycling from your cabin / trailer / truck / tent / car/ etc., so we don’t have to do more.
  • The online store is offline this year. Please purchase your tickets and swag on site.
  • A set of chains went missing from the back of a truck last weekend. Just don’t, okay?
  • Speaking of chains, make sure you have them. The road was slippery last weekend and chains were required, especially going downhill.

Finally, to those who park in the parking lot – either by day or for the weekend – you have done a bang-up job with the parking. Thanks for taking the time to do it right. Greatly appreciated by everyone but especially Team Grader.

It’s -5° with 168cm on the Ridge Run. It will be cold this weekend, so pack some extra layers.

See you on the slopes,

Jen
