If you have read the weather predictions, or maybe your tea leaves, you know snow is coming this weekend. Snowforcast predicts 50cm of snow by Friday night and Windy says 40cm by Saturday. Having been misled by these channels in the past, I turned to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and YR website to confirm the rumour. After triangulating the data on the back of an envelope, I can say with over 90% confidence that there will be fresh snow at Cain this weekend. My research was confirmed by our very own Weatherman Zealand in his latest forecast. So time to rise and glide, my friends; the mountain is calling you.

With snow in the forecast, there is a chance the parking lot will be full, so please park close to vehicles beside you (less than 4 feet away). If you are camping this weekend, all awnings/tarps/cooking areas must be set up behind vehicles, not beside them, to fit more vehicles. Park your vehicle in the green areas noted in the map below. Our parking lot attendant will be there to guide you, but the more you know, the easier it is for everyone. We do not charge for camping, but you can help support Mount Cain by making a donation at the ticket booth.

And the fun never stops at Mount Cain! Next weekend, February 11th, is Backcountry Fest! Come for the education and training, stay for the live music and great company. Activities begin on Friday, February 10th, with an outdoor movie (bring a chair, blanket, and thermos of something warm to drink). On Saturday, you can build a snow fort, learn about avalanches, and practice beacon search and rescue. There will be ski and snowboard demos from Ski Tak Hut and Kindred, treasures from The Backcountry Jewelers, and lots of great safety information from Team Aero Medical Rescue, Campbell River Search and rescue, and Avalanche Canada. Look for more details coming your way shortly.

Live music by Ianspotting will entertain you while you purchase beer from Cumberland Brewery and Devil’s Bath brewery, with proceeds going towards a new groomer. Make sure your drink safely by consuming a delicious BBQ burger!

As we settle into the rhythm of the 2023 season, I want to take a second to thank the many, many volunteers who keep this mountain humming. There are people who plow the road, set race courses, wash pinnies, fix lists, fill photo albums, pick up parts in town, make posters, organize events, help with school groups, and more. Thank you to everyone who lends a hand. That, my friends,  is what magic is made of.

It is 0.5° and there is 103cm of snow on the Ridge Run,

See you on the slopes,

Jen
