The cold crisp smell of winter has transformed into the soft sweet smell of spring, and bittersweet change is in the air. I was thinking about this as I put my ski gear to bed for the summer and began packing for our first boat trip of the year. It is always sad when the T bar stops running and the doors of the Lodge are locked for the summer, but in the words of third-generation Sointulian and Cain local Owen Barlak “only 243 more days until ski season”. We will be back.
The world is also changing – pandemic, war, climate change, the price of everything. As we wander through this life of uncertainty, we look for familiar harbours where we can drop anchor and find solace. On the days when you feel strong, be someone’s safe harbour. And when you feel adrift, search out a pal from Cain to lean on. It is the least we can do for each other until we return to the mountain for some ski therapy.
This season was one for the books. From the adventures in powder snow to the misadventures in the Lodge, there was never a dull moment. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank you all for being part of Cain. As a not-for-profit organization, we count the smiles on people’s faces, not the bottom line, when measuring our wealth, and we are rich beyond our means. But this only happens because many of you lend a hand when needed, understand our quirks, and practice grace and kindness. It was an honour to ski with you all this season.
My coffee cup is empty, the sun is above the horizon, and the tide has turned. It is time to go down to the dock, untie the lines, and answer the ocean’s call. Change can be a good thing.
Until next time,
Jen
