Cain Cup returned in all its glory last weekend after covid kicked it off the course in 2021. The sun was shining, the turns were fast, and the smiles were wide. Over 40 skiers participated, with the top 10 men and 10 women skiing off for the cup. The Fastest Woman Going Downhill in 2022 is Megan Walters, and the Fastest Man Going Downhill is Josh Cunningham. Congratulations – you can wear your titles with pride. See below for full results.
And there were other winners last week too.
A group of 8 staff and volunteers took their Avalanche Skills Training (AST1), embarking on the adventure of gaining the knowledge necessary to explore the backcountry. Being in the backcountry requires the right mindset, equipment, and knowledge, so it is essential to be prepared if you are venturing outside the safety of Mount Cain. You can learn about exploring the backcountry at Backcountry Festival on February 12th at your favourite little ski hill with a big heart.
Apparently, some competitions involving koalas and tables took place in the Lodge over the weekend. While the winners remain unknown, rumour has it videos are circulating. Who knows what happens at Turk’s Tavern when the sun goes down? Only those brave enough to enter.
Everyone on Saturday were winners when the sunshine softened the snow, and we had spring skiing in January. If you can’t have powder, you might as well have sunshine. And possibly a cold beer/pop to go along with it.
As I write this, there is a base of 133cm and it’s 6 degrees at the weather station on the Ridge Run. But don’t fret; temperatures are expected to drop this weekend, with a chance of snow on Sunday. And as long as we can be together at Cain, we are all winners, no matter the weather.
