Have you ever wanted to rise to the top by racing to the bottom? Well, your chance to do this is just around the corner. The annual Cain Cup will be held on January 22 to determine the fastest man and fastest woman on the mountain. The winners will be endowed with riches from the Ski Shop, Blue Toque and others esteemed establishments. The winners will also be immortalized in Cain history when their names are engraved on the Cain Cup trophy.
But this event is not open to just Crazy Canucks – everyone can participate. Check out Cain Cup 2013 in this video filmed by the greatly missed Jeff Jones
The day will begin with registration at the Lodge, starting at 8:30. All boarders and skiers of any skill level can enter the Race on the Face. Never skied a race course? No problem, this event is perfect for you. It is all about the fun and excitement of skiing a course. The only qualifying criteria are you must be over 16 and fully vaccinated.
The Race on the Face begins at 10:00 am – plenty of time to have breakfast at Turks Tavern before limbering up. Winners for each age group will be announced at the end of the day.
The 10 fastest women and 10 fastest men from the morning race will qualify for the Cain Cup Race, which takes place at 1:30 from the Upper Ridge to the Face. The winners will be crowned the Fastest Skiers at Cain.
We have all been dealing with what feels like the 57th wave of Covid. Come join the fun of the Cain Cup and forget about Covid for the 45 seconds it takes you to finish the course. And 45 seconds without thinking about Covid is a gift we all deserve.
On another note, Monday, January 17, will bring the return of Magic Mondays, and we need some volunteers. Each Monday, one or two schools from the North Island come to experience Cain. This is the first time skiing or boarding for many youth, and our volunteers work hard to make it an incredible experience. This Monday, we have Eke Me-Xi Secondary from Port Hardy, and we need volunteer instructors. You don’t need to be a certified instructor, just double vaxxed.
Why is it called Magic Monday you ask? The magic of inspiring new skiers and boarders to love the snow as much as you do. If you can help please drop by the ski shop on Monday morning at 9:15 for orientation.
See you on the slopes,
Jen
PS Omicron is spreading and we need to be extra careful. You must be double vaxxed to go in the Lodge, masks must be worn when walking in the Lodge, and masks are highly recommended when you are in the lineup and riding the lifts. You can learn more about the Mount Cain covid protocols here.
